Website Design

With your own website, you can tell and share your amazing story the way you want. Unlike Facebook and alike, you own your website, it is your style, and you control the content.

The Platform Choice is WordPress

Decades ago, when I worked as a social and cultural affairs officer at the Indonesian Embassy in Vienna, Austria, one of my responsibilities was content creation and the maintenance of the embassy’s website.

Back then, every single change needed time-consuming HTML coding. Years later, when I started my own webmaster business in Australia, I specialized in WordPress, being my choice of website building software. I am not exaggerating when I say that WordPress has changed the world of web design. Learning WordPress was the best choice ever.

Why do I say this to you? If you decide to choose my services for your project, you will get a website built on WordPress. My vision is that you take ownership of your website and enjoy working on it as much as I do. Please take your time to read the following sections, where I briefly introduce some of the basics, to get a better understanding of what to expect.

All Websites Include

Some Basics You Should Know

Once you have decided to get a website, you will need a hosting provider unless you are self-hosting. You might already have a preferred provider, or ask me to help you choose the right service. Opening a hosting account is pretty simple and I am happy to assist. If you are hosting your website with me, disregard this section. I will do it all for you. In general, you won’t be visiting your hosting account often. All website-related work is done from within your cPanel and WordPress dashboard.

The cPanel is the highest level control center and is accessible from your hosting account dashboard. Within your cPanel, you have access to many tools and applications, such as your WordPress installation, file manager, web disk, FTP accounts, domains and sub-domains, databases, email accounts, metrics, security applications, SSL certificates and much more. Although you most likely won’t use many of those apps, they are there and all part of your account.

Talking about accounts, your cPanel account is the second account, which I will set up for you. I will assign you the administrator role and full access. Total control is essential if you want to move your website to another hosting provider or if you feel it is time to say “Good Bye” to me (which hopefully won’t happen).

Every website starts with a domain name like ‘yourbusinessname.com’ or ‘.org,’ ‘.net,’ ‘.edu’ etc. After your domain name has been successfully registered, I can get started setting up your email accounts. The number of email accounts is up to you; theoretically, you can have as many as you like.

Typical email addresses are ‘yourname@yourbusinessname.com’, ‘info@yourbusinessname.com,’ or hello@yourbusinessname.com.’ The choice is up to you.

Once I have set up your email accounts, you can access them through your cPanel with webmail apps like Horde or Roundcube. Those apps, however, offer limited functionality, and you certainly don’t want to have to log in to your cPanel whenever you want to check or compose emails.

Consequently, the next logical step is to connect your new email to your preferred email client like Outlook or Apple Mail on your desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. If you are a Gmail user, you can upgrade to a Google G Suite account and connect your new email domain to Google. Whatever works best for you, I will get it done.

Your WordPress dashboard is where you will find yourself, and me, most of the time. It is the portal where we work on your website to create the layout, pages, blogs and any content. Here we will develop, add and edit.

Your website consists of pages, posts, and products (if you attach an online shop to it). Your pages are the core, or skeleton, of your website. Pages won’t change much over time unless you need to update information. On the contrary, blog posts and products are highly dynamic content elements.

It is my priority to familiarize you with your WordPress dashboard and its tools. Unless you are so short on time that you prefer to outsource maintenance and further content creation to me, I highly encourage you to learn the necessary skills to work on your website. To help you with this, I offer individualized or group WordPress training. Check it out on my website under Consultation & Training, in the menu.

So, why should you work on your website? Well, imagine it as a living organism. A website has to grow and develop, reflecting the vibrant life of your project or business. If you want to engage your audience or get new clients, you should share your unique story and news with the world. The right way to do this efficiently, is to post attractive snippets of your news on social media and link them to the corresponding blog post on your website.

Don’t underestimate the impact of your story. With your website, you have become a publisher, and theoretically, the whole world can read and see what you publish. If you don’t post anything, you won’t be seen. Your website is all about quality content.

There are several ways to create an engaging website. I can develop it from scratch or install a theme. You might ask, what is a theme? In WordPress, a theme is a collection of templates and stylesheets used to define the appearance and display of a WordPress-powered website. Themes can be changed, managed and added from the WordPress administration area. Given the sheer number of WordPress themes nowadays, it would be a waste of time and money to develop one from scratch. However you won’t choose a WordPress theme by its look only.

Themes, just like any software product, come and go. After nearly a decade of web development experience, I have sourced a handful of themes that hold up to my quality standards. The theme developers I work with have been on the market for years. They are rated best in their field, provide regular updates, respond immediately to fix issues and code visually stunning, future-proof, user-friendly and reliable WordPress themes.

Another reason to develop websites based on a premium theme, is based on the assumption that you will be working on your website too.

Instead of seeing you getting frustrated with complicated user interfaces and editing limitations, you might consider buying a license for a trusted premium theme. I want you to love your website and to work on it with joy and not with hesitation.

The trend in contemporary web design is leading away from traditional coding. Complicated and confusing HTML code is a thing of the past, or very well hidden behind the state-of-the-art visual editing tools. Nowadays, you don’t have to be a coding guru to design or edit a website. All you need is a visual editor and your creativity. You will be delighted with this development because the last thing you want to do is coding. How boring! I want our creativity to shine in the light of your vision and help design an awesome website for you.

The even better news: If I can design, you can too. Your new website will have a premium Bakery Visual Composer or premium Elementor editor plugin, with full administrator access installed. I want to see your website grow into something even more awesome. What is the point of designing something beautiful if you don’t continue to breathe life into it?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO, is a pretty controversial topic. Are you creating content for search engine robots or human readers? Well, humans, of course, robots won’t become your clients or audience.

The issue with SEO is that marketers and SEO specialists are too focused on writing SEO for Google ranking while ignoring human readers. Besides, they charge enormously for their services.

Google & Co are continually changing their algorithms and fortunately they’ve learned to value genuine human reader content above SEO robot reader content.

Your website will come with Yoast SEO, the leading SEO plugin. I will write the basic SEO for the pages, which is included in our agreement. Additionally, you will get advice and training on how to write SEO yourself. Remember, the heart of your website beats in your continuously growing blog content. Your pages are the shiny body but your blog is the soul of your business.
